“Fashion Show” (ca.1956)
16mm film (orig.)
This fashion show was shot for and aired on WNAO-TV, Raleigh’s first television station, which was established in 1953 and disbanded in 1957. The film depicts women and children wearing fashionable garments from an “Easter Portfolio of Spring Fashions” featured in the magazine Woman’s Home Companion. This magazine was published monthly between 1873 and 1957 and the issue used in the film is from March 1956. The film may have been shot soon after the issue’s release to entice viewers to purchase the magazine and learn about the spring fashion for the season. The March 1956 issue would have cost consumers a mere 35 cents and covered a variety of topics, including the benefits of a religious education on children, advertisements for home products (including make-up and laundry detergent), and articles on improving domestic work.
